Nigeria has declared a nationwide security emergency, with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu authorizing a major expansion of police and military personnel in response to worsening attacks across several northern states.
The announcement follows a series of deadly assaults on villages, schools, and worship centers in Kebbi, Borno, Zamfara, Niger, Yobe, and Kwara States, where civilians and soldiers — including Brigadier-General Musa Uba — have been killed.
50,000 Security Personnel to Be Deployed Nationwide
Under the new directive:
-
The Nigerian Police Force and Armed Forces are authorized to recruit 30,000 additional officers, bringing active deployments to 50,000.
-
Police training facilities will be expanded, with NYSC camps temporarily used as training depots.
-
Officers withdrawn from VIP escort duties will undergo crash retraining before redeployment to high-risk areas.
-
The DSS and forest guards have been instructed to intensify operations against terrorists and bandits hiding in forests.
Tinubu emphasized that “there will be no more hiding places for agents of evil.”
States Advised to Strengthen Local Security Frameworks
Tinubu urged state governments to:
-
Review laws that allow them to establish state-level police forces.
-
Rethink boarding schools in remote, insecure areas.
-
Work closely with security agencies to improve rapid response.
The president also encouraged religious institutions to partner with police to secure gatherings in vulnerable communities.
Addressing Farmer–Herder Clashes
The administration announced that the federal Livestock Ministry is working with states to resolve decades-long clashes between farmers and herders.
Tinubu urged herder associations to embrace ranching and surrender illegal weapons, saying sustainable livestock farming is “the path forward for national harmony.”
A Call for Unity and Vigilance
Tinubu expressed deep sympathy to the families of victims and commended the bravery of soldiers who have died in the line of duty. He urged Nigerians not to succumb to fear:
“Let us stand together in purpose and strength… Report suspicious activities. Cooperate with security agencies. We are in this fight together, and together we shall win.”
The president reiterated his commitment to restoring peace and protecting citizens across all regions, emphasizing that the nation must “remain calm, united, and vigilant.
