Elgeyo-Marakwet County, Kenya — November 2025
Heavy rains have unleashed deadly landslides and flash floods in Kenya’s western Rift Valley, killing at least 26 people and leaving many others missing.
Aerial footage from Elgeyo-Marakwet County shows the devastating scale — vast stretches of land buried in mud, roads washed away, and homes destroyed.
Officials say more than 1,000 homes have been reduced to rubble.
🚨 Night of Disaster
According to Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for the Interior, Kipchumba Murkomen, at least 25 people with serious injuries have been airlifted to Eldoret for emergency treatment.
Authorities also report that around 30 people remain missing as rescue efforts continue.
The landslide struck overnight in Chesongoch, a hilly area long known to be prone to such disasters.
Locals describe the terrifying moment it happened.
“I heard a deafening sound,” said Stephen Kittony, a resident who spoke to Citizen Television. “I rushed out with my children — we ran in different directions.”
🆘 Rescue Efforts Underway
The Kenyan Red Cross has shared dramatic aerial images of the destruction and confirmed it is working with government agencies to rescue trapped residents and airlift the injured.

“Access to some of the affected areas remains extremely difficult due to flooding and blocked routes,” the organization said in a statement on X.
This region has suffered similar tragedies before — with dozens killed in 2010 and 2012, and a shopping center washed away in 2020.
💔 Original East Take
Nature has once again reminded us of its power — and of how fragile life can be in the Rift Valley.
We send our thoughts and prayers to all the affected families. May rescue efforts reach those still missing.
